The communities Perene Institute works in produce a variety of articles and foods sourced from local mangroves and waterways. Whether collecting shells by the thousands to make handicrafts, extracting oil from palm nuts, or digging for shellfish in mangroves, women in the Reconcavo region of Bahia are accustomed to hard work. Yet a lack of credit, training and infrastructure keep local women from realizing their potential as entrepreneurs. Perene has built strong ties with local women´s association through our cookstove initiative and together we have identified concrete steps toward improving women´s livelihoods across hundreds of communities. Microcredit, training and strengthening entrepreneurial skills are investments that empower women to move beyond subsistence production and prosper as leaders in their region´s economy.
